Predator Free Martinborough?
We all know that many NZ native species are under serious threat from introduced predators and there are many conservation projects working in the wild to address this. It is not always quite so clear what we as urban residents can do. Well, here’s a chance for everyone to have an impact.
As part of its Predator-Free New Zealand initiative the government is supporting a programme of backyard trapping. In that way everyone in the community can become part of the solution. Some very successful trapping programmes are already operating in Wellington suburbs and elsewhere in New Zealand.
Special traps have been designed that work only for the target species (rats, mice, stoats, ferrets etc). These also reduce the yuk factor for the squeamish!
Local resident Jane Lenting has organised for DOC experts to come to Martinborough to talk to interested residents about how they can become involved. If we can harness our well-recognised community spirit maybe we can make Martinborough a model town for predator trapping.
The talk will be held at 41B Weld Street (leave cars on road) at 5pm on Thursday, 13 December. If you are interested or would like more information you can contact Jane Lenting at janelenting@xtra.co.nz, or call 021 025 78799. If you plan to attend please RSVP to Jane by Tuesday 11 December.
