Martinborough Golf Round-Up

August 21, 2019 August 2019, Sports No Comments

The treacherous but beautiful 18th green’.

As we pass into our final month of Winter with Spring creeping ever closer, it’s always uplifting to see lambs in the paddocks – especially when they’re appreciating a beautiful day of sunshine of which we have been lucky to enjoy several in July.

By in large the golf hasn’t been too badly affected by the wet weather, and despite being very soggy underfoot in places, the course is looking great and the greens are running superbly…catching many of us unawares with their speed….number 18 has been responsible for quite a few expensive three (and more) putts!!

Grumpies have been unlucky with the weather on a few occasions but winners have included Roger Smeaton and Andrew Lawler.

Ladies golf in July seems to have been dominated by Julie Weber who has won three times and been runner up once when Adele Cairns snuck past her!  Riverside Cup matches finished with Martinborough ending up in second place.  Team selector, Gretel Dick, was grateful to Jo Loe and Sandra Petersen who played in all the matches and won all their games – nice work ladies!!

Thursdays have had the rub of the green (excuse the pun) with some beautiful days; winners have included Andy Morison, Chris Ranish, Stu Taplin, Mariana, Andrew Sim & Malcolm Wood.

The Dick Bennett Memorial was played in Martinborough for the first time after many years as a popular Featherston tournament. The trophy was won by by Jackson & Peter Gray who won the men’s division with 50, 2nd Scotty the Butcher & Shane Hartnell 47, 3rd John Taylor & Carl Petersen 46, 4th Nuki Gordon & Jason Paku 45, 5th Doug Clark & Stu Taplin 45, 6th Eddie Brown & Johnson Williams 45, 7th Richard Mills & Mike Charteris 45 – Welcome home Mike, it’s great to have you and Cath back in Martinborough!!  Mixed division, 1st Nick & Ju Allen 44, 2nd Mr & Mrs Gumboot 40, 3rd Tim & Jo Loe 39, Women 1st Mariana McDermott & Sally Fairbrother.

Congratulations to the Martinborough Senior Rugby team who won the Tui Cup – the first time in 28 years – it was a brilliant game and a well-deserved win – the reserves won their plate game too so it was a tremendous result all round!!

Coming up the Bottle-O lefties/righties 36-hole tournament Saturday 17th August, entries to the office.  Speaking of the office, we welcome a ‘new’ familiar face – Kris Chamberlein!

That’s all from me for July, take care of you and yours – and good golfing everyone!!
