Walking Group Wants Wonderful New Walkway 

Three years ago the Friday Walking Group started as part of the Martinborough Community Health Project.  Since then members have covered every street in Martinborough many times over.  Now they are setting their sights on expanding the available walking opportunities.   

Their vision is to add a new trail on the northern side of town broadly following the Round The Vines route.   It would link up with the Palliser Vineyard Walk to create a circuit and a beautiful, tranquil experience away from the traffic and bustle of the village.  There would be wonderful views of the hills, the river and the vineyards.  The plan includes a well-formed path so it’s accessible to everyone and a shared space for walkers, cyclists and people with dogs.  

“People already visit Martinborough for the wine and the cycling.  Walking could become another big drawcard”, says Sue Dalton who is a passionate advocate for the initiative.  “It will complement the three existing walks that were set up some time ago by Mike Laven with support from Richard Riddiford.” 

.  Led by Sue Dalton, Les Roberts and Sue McLeary the group has already put their case to the Martinborough Community Board.  “We’ve asked the Board to support the concept in principle and to help with the necessary feasibility work.  We also see an opportunity for volunteers to be involved in the project.  We really hope the community will get in behind it.”

The Friday Walking Group meets at Kitcheners at 9 am every Friday morning.  All keen walkers welcome.  Duration 1 hour.
