From the Mayor
Finally, we have had some rain, and watering restrictions can be lifted.
I was asked by a resident why, if we felt we had compliant and robust water supply we still needed to have watering restrictions. The reality is, in mid-summer, aquifers and rivers are under strain, and to protect the environment, we need to control our usage. It’s all part of valuing our natural resources to ensure there is enough water for everyone in the future.
I have been informed that the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade has reached a solution regarding ambulance services and will be able to provide some medic assistance when attending callouts. I’m sure there is more information on this in The Star, but it sounds like a good resolution to a long running issue.
The Martinborough Fair is coming up – and I encourage you to visit any water tank stands that may be turning up this year. We have the arranged discount on tanks sold within our district, and I encourage everyone to consider installation for gardens.
Finally, consultation is now open for our Long Term and Spatial Plans. The Long Term Plan sets our strategic direction, activities and budgets for the next ten years. Our Spatial Plan sets the blueprint for what we want our district to look like in 30 years – this is step one focused on residential growth.
There are rates increases, but we are not hiding from what needs to be done within the district with respect to infrastructure and how we can fix these problems. Please read the consultation documents on what we are proposing.
Don’t forget that submissions for both plans run concurrently and close on 30 April 2021. To make a submission you will find the feedback form in the Midweek on the 7th of April in the Midweek, alternatively you cand do it online via our website; www.swdc.govt.nz/consultations, or pick up a hard copy from the Council office or Library.
