An Afternoon of Gorgeous Opera

An-afternoon-of-glorious-opera Sunday 5 October 3pm – 5pm
David & Winifred Bull of The Cabbage Tree Vineyard in Martinborough are pleased to be hosting another fundraising concert in their home for the benefit of young singers. Students of the New Zealand School of Music, Classical Voice, Victoria University, will perform arias, ensembles and opera scenes from The Barber of Seville, Orpheus in the Underworld, The Magic Flute, Don Pasquale, Peter Grimes and La Boheme. They will be accompanied by Mark Dorrell, Music Director for the Orpheus Choir, Wellington.
Last year, the students performed a Verdi opera – Il Corsaro. It was extraordinarily successful.

Opera productions are crucial because they give students the opportunity to experience participation in a full length opera – seeing how their voices carry, honing their acting and language skills and gaining an idea of the commitment needed to perform at this level. Mounting an opera is an expensive business. The funds from this concert will go towards the 2015 opera production.
The New Zealand School of Music – Classical Voice is led by Margaret Medlyn, Richard Greager and Jenny Wollerman. All have had successful international and national careers on the opera stage. They are particularly proud that the first and third places in the recent Lexus Song Quest were awarded to Isabella Moore and Christian Thurston respectively. Both these singers played leading roles in Il Corsaro.
