Marc Tuffield an old time Wairarapa College boy,  left school to work as a shepherd at Eparaima, Glenburn and Waimoana, which enabled him to continue his passion for hunting in his spare time.

A change of scene saw him working for the Forestry Service checking on the huts in the Tararuas.  Reaching Angle Nob one evening it was dark and the winds were beginning to pick up, culminating in a full-time blast. He was in the hut hunkering down when a ferocious blast picked up the hut, and turned it face down. “The door was jammed shut. Getting out was quite a challenge. My only route of escape was to kick my way through a perspex window. All that remained of the hut was the floorboards. Unsurprisingly it no longer exists.”  … Continue Reading

Following up on the talk by Climate Paleontologist Chris Hollis in Martinborough last month the Aorangi Restoration Trust is organizing a day Field Trip to the Tora Coast so folk can have a look at the amazing material that Chris discussed in his talk first hand. Chris will lead a day tour showing us the points of interest and discussing how they were discovered, and the science behind it all.

It was a very turbulent place At Manurewa Point, Tora, about 66 million years ago. Several massive tsunamis resulting from the impact from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs smashed into the ancient New Zealand coastline and the backwashing material went in a big tumble back out to sea. Some of the remnants of this dramatic event can still be seen in the coastline today. … Continue Reading

How’s your summer been? Since Council returned from holidays last month, there’s been a lot going on, both negative and positive.

Cyclone Hale was one such surprise, bringing with it a nasty sting in its tail for our eastern coastline. Several roads were closed by flooding and slips, most notably White Rock and Tora roads. It was terrible timing for Tora, as there were tourists there and a music festival imminent. 

I particularly want to thank Fulton Hogan and our roading team Ruamāhanga Roads, a number of whose staff came back from holiday to help make Tora Road accessible again. The enormity of the slip cannot be under-estimated – more than 125 truck-loads of material were taken away.  … Continue Reading
