Mayor’s Comment for June

June 12, 2023 June 2023, Regular Features Comments Off on Mayor’s Comment for June

Last week your Council was delivered a bombshell.  We were informed that the Martinborough wastewater plant had reached capacity and that we should no longer allow additional connections to it.  As many of us know, this plant does not comply with its consent conditions.  We are now told that additional connections risk making that non-compliance even more serious.

This decision does not affect existing homes or existing construction projects that have a wastewater connection already approved.  But it does affect people who are planning to build soon.  This means that it also affects builders, developers, and people who supply the construction industry.  … Continue Reading

Parkinson’s Social Support Group

When you are going through a challenging time, family members and friends may sympathise but they don’t always know what to say or the best ways to help.  Whatever issues you or a loved one are facing the best medicine can often be the voice of people who have walked in your shoes.   Hearing from others facing similar challenges can also make you feel less alone in your troubles.

Support groups are groups of people facing common issues where they share personal experiences and coping strategies, offer support and encouragement.  They provide various types of help, usually nonprofessional and nonmaterial.  It is a safe place for people to talk about experiences, struggles and thoughts, and a great way to get information that is practical, constructive and helpful. … Continue Reading

Community Garden News June 2023

Little action  at the Community garden at the moment due to Wet! Wet! Wet!

This is due to a large extent to the location of the garden on the downward slope of Oxford Street ( as those of you who live in this area will appreciate), and of course the ever present rain.

Our top crops are proving to be our saviour in the planting boxes, and have all taken well, due in no small part to the fact that despite the rain the soil has maintained a relatively warm temperature.  In order to  project forward to some continuity of crops we have sewn broad bean  and pea crops among the top crops. This affords them some shelter and protection from the wetness. Fingers crossed this will have positive results. … Continue Reading

Labyrinth

For those of you who took the time to walk the Labyrinth, thank you, we had a wide range of age groups taking the time to slowly walk, reflect and just take in the atmosphere surrounding the labyrinth in the Town Hall.  Our youngest was just 8 months and the oldest into their 90’s.

It is also wonderful to acknowledge the widespread distribution of the Star, which reached many of our visitors, who came from the Wairarapa as far as Masterton and wider afield, Upper Hutt and Wellington.

For those who have walked Labyrinth’s throughout the world, or this being your first time, thank you for coming. … Continue Reading
