TITANIC – A LEGEND IN THE MAKING
At Probus last month we were treated to a very enlightening talk by Graeme Jupp which covered the “before” story of the Titanic sinking. He had prepared an in depth presentation on how the Titanic came to be constructed, photos and images of the building process (which was done side by side with a sister ship) right through to the tragic sinking.
In common with most other Probus members I thought I knew most of the main points about the Titanic but one thing I was not aware of was that as the bow went under during the sinking, the ship actually broke in two as it had not been built to withstand the type of pressures it was subject to as it sank. It is now common knowledge that there were not nearly enough lifeboats to carry all the people on board and this fact changed the way subsequent vessels were fitted out.
Graeme Jupp has a deep and intelligent interest in ocean liners generally and we thoroughly enjoyed the insights he gave us into the shipping industry and shipbuilding in the early twentieth century.
Graeme’s talk was right up there with a line of interesting and entertaining speakers we have enjoyed in recent months.
