Community Garden News

Not too much news other than more rain happening in the Garden at present. This provides a bit of space to remember a remarkable liaison with Mike Beckett. Every month, for the last 5, or so years, I would get a timely reminder from Mike about the due date for an item about the Community Garden. The request assured me of the interest and value of the article. When the weather had been ghastly, he would offer understanding.  If there was nothing to write about, he would include a few comments on the state of his garden. He had the patience of a saint, with my total lack of technical skills, and eventually I have learnt to get content and photos delivered in a printable form!  Along the way we shared stories, and the occasional photos of gardens and his grandchildren; always seasonal greetings and a bit of banter about plans, and the annual “we must meet up for a coffee next year”.  Sadly, we never did. However, I still feel that I have lost a friend with Mike’s passing. RIP Mike! Maybe in another universe we will meet for a coffee. … Continue Reading

Another grape harvest has been completed, and by all accounts for most it has been a season to forget, due to the constant rainfall we have experienced.  With ANZAC Day commemorations around the district occurring today the weather played ball thankfully.  Our dawn parade in The Square was well attended and it was great to hear Martinborough School pupils reading the names of local servicemen who lost their lives overseas, ensuring their sacrifices are not forgotten. … Continue Reading

FIRE BRIGADE REPORT

May 8, 2023 May 2023, Regular Features Comments Off on FIRE BRIGADE REPORT

APRIL 2023

Chief Fire Officer Jake Hawkins

The Brigade continues another steady month, with several serious motor vehicle accidents around our region along with our regular Medical First Response calls.

We had an excellent training opportunity with Ngawi, Lake Ferry and our lower Wairarapa Rescue Tender from Greytown, down at Ngawi with a simulated vehicle accident with a car off the road. It provided an exciting opportunity for newer members of all the Brigades to get their hands dirty, try out the equipment, sharpen skills and for some their first experiences in patient care during an extrication. Big thanks to Ngawi Brigade for organising and hosting this. … Continue Reading

New golf clubhouse build, fund-raising up and running

Martinborough golf’s new clubhouse build is well under way _ as are fundraising efforts. It doesn’t seem long since we watched the demolition of the old clubhouse and now the frames for half the new building are in place with scaffolding up ready for the roof timbers. Everything is going …
