Community Board Notes

May 12, 2015 May 2015 No Comments

I am writing this at the end of a long weekend which has left me thinking about community spirit. I was amongst the hundreds of people who turned out for the ANZAC ceremony in Martinborough Square in a simple, but powerful, act of remembrance. Families, young, old, visitors to our town, Councillors & Community Board our Fire Brigade, representatives of our armed services and more, all came together at dawn to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As ever, Archdeacon May Croft conducted a moving service and I’m sure I was not alone at being particularly affected by our school children reading the names of those long gone. It is important that we remember, and it is important that we come together as a community.

Another fine example of the Martinborough community spirit this long weekend was the Skyline Challenge on Sunday 26th April, an event, organised and supported by Lions, that served as both a fundraiser and an opportunity for us to once again gather together as a community and experience our wonderful landscapes (whilst cursing the hills under our breaths).

As you may know your Community Board are strong supporters of the Waihinga Centre project, and the over $1.2million raised so far is another example of the strength of our community. The project itself will offer many opportunities for us all to be involved both financially and by taking part in the many fundraising events that are being planned.

Once built the Centre will be the perfect venue for us to come together as a community to celebrate, to watch or take part in performances and, most of all, to just run into each other as we attend a Plunket appointment or check out a book from the library. If you have thought about making a pledge to fund our new Centre, now is a good time with a fund-raising drive planned for May. For pledges you can call Victoria Read on 0272 271 252 or Max Stevens on 06 306 9095.

I’m available on Email:  martinboroughlisa@cornelissen.co.nz or Phone: (028) 2553 4857 to discuss any Community Board matters.
