THE ANNUAL number of people illegally entering the UK has, since 2018, soared, from 13,377 to 36,792 last year. Including the 41,000 who have arrived so far this year, the vast majority, 28,526 last year, have come on “small boats”. THE FIRST policewomen in England to complete their training and assume active duty, Misses Mary Allen and E.F. Harburn, went on the beat at Grantham Lincolnshire in November 1914. It was felt that the women’s presence could help reduce tensions. The women were unpaid.
