Dinosaurs, dragons and dungeons – a wealth of dreams in kids’ playground designs
In December the Council enlisted the creativity of children in the Martinborough ward to help inspire and influence design for a new play area through a ‘Draw your Dream Playground’ competition.
Mayor Adrienne Staples said, “We were looking for truly imaginative ideas for what we hope will become an iconic destination play ground for the region – and we got them!”
Judges had a very happy time reviewing entries from children aged 5-12 years attending Kahutara, Martinborough, Pirinoa and Tuturumuri Schools. Ideas ranged from gravity-free flying tanks, a dinosaur lagoon where you can swim with mythical water creatures alongside real ones, chocolate fountains, mud slides, an ice rink, a ‘grow your own grapes and make juice’ stand, petting zoos and a dungeon.
Apart from a splendid disregard for personal safety and expense, consistent themes in the dreams include fun with water; a distinctive centerpiece to inspire adventure – such as a tree house, airplane, celestial dragon or pirate ship; picnic tables and other amenities for families; as well as all manner of ways for children to clamber and climb, slide, swing and generally get messy.
Pictures of the finalists will be on display at the Library from mid February and inventors of the best entries will be presented with a certificate at school assemblies when the new year starts. Winners of the ‘best of the best’ entry from each the four schools will receive a gift voucher from Pain & Kershaw Variety Store.
