District Council candidates
Alice Arndell
Martinborough and the South Wairarapa is a wonderful place to live. So much so that it only took a day for my husband, Shane (a Captain in the Royal New Zealand Navy), and I to make the life-altering decision to move here five years ago.
I joined the Playcentre and Toy Library committees, volunteered at toddler music, and quickly became grounded in the community though our daughter Isobel. I wrote two cookbooks, developed my career as a food writer, and I was overwhelmed by the support I received from Martinborough businesses and individuals alike.
Standing for council is a decision I have not made lightly, but I am pleased to have this opportunity to give back to a community that means so much to me. Being self-employed, I have the time and energy to dedicate to the important role of councillor and, more importantly, the willingness and ability to help the district grow and prosper.
Our current council has a done a great job with wastewater consents and other vital services in recent years. But, with the increasing number of people choosing to make South Wairarapa their home while commuting into Wellington, we need to reconsider public transport and work with other councils that encourages both population retention and growth.
Through my work with the local food and beverage industry, I have seen what an amazing resource and opportunity for growth we have in our district, and I firmly believe that council should do more to help promote and support farmers, growers and producers within the region to develop both food tourism and production associated industries.
With the change vital decision on the structure of our local government on the horizon, it is more important than ever to ensure that our elected officials are forward thinking, impartial, and considerate of the region as a whole, all qualities that I possess. As a councillor I will work tirelessly for the benefit of the wider South Wairarapa community and, if necessary, put aside my own personal preferences to work constructively whatever the final decision on amalgamation.
As someone and who has a vested interest in Wairarapa’s future for my child, I will stand up for Martinborough and the South Wairarapa with a strong reasoned voice. If elected, I will do my best to ensure all residents enjoy a safe and vibrant community with strong infrastructure led by an effective, cohesive council.
