Featherston Amateur Wrestling Club May notes

June 12, 2023 June 2023 No Comments

A busy month at the Wrestling Club with the AGM, followed by an ambrose golf day and the local tournament where our juniors got the chance to test themselves versus the Tawa and Waikanae clubs – many for the first time.

The golf fundraiser was a great day out with a tonne of generous prizes, the pick of them being a chainsaw for closest to the pin donated by Martinborough Automotive.

Other sponsors included The Loft Barbers, Lake Ferry Hotel, the Pukemanu, Martinborough Transport, Circus Cinema, Property Brokers, Ata Rangi and Te Kairanga!

Fair to say our golfers were spoilt with the prizes available. A huge thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers and golfers who made it such a great day out. The club raised the targeted funds to cover our two senior wrestlers tournament costs in Sydney.

On Sunday 14 May it hosted the region’s other wrestling clubs in an U17 tournament.  With some 40 wrestlers split into groups according to age and weight it meant a fun day with good competition in every bout.  With the walls lined with supporters, the BBQ  sizzling outside and the buzz of Booktown our visitors all enjoyed their trip to Featherson!

Our senior team also attended a NZ Wrestling training camp in Hamilton and competed in the Waikato Championships coming home with 2 gold and 2 silver medals. A special mention to Wairangi Sargent who wrestled with distinction.

Coming up at the end of May is the club’s trail bike ride on Yeronga Road, Pirinoa, run by the Sargent Motorcycles team. Another important support to ensure wrestling costs are minimised and our sport is accessible to all. Come and check it out 5.30pm Wednesdays, 53 Fitzherbert Street, Featherston.
