MARTINBOROUGH GOLF

May 12, 2014 May 2014, Regular Features, Sports No Comments

Back from a break down South where I met some interesting people along the way. I spent a night with Freeman Jackson an ex club captain and his wife Hazel which was very enjoyable and one of the highlights of my trip.

I also went to Ashburton and caught up with some of my old mates, the “lefties” who had just finished their week of Nationals. The poor chaps played in some terrible weather conditions.
But on the club scene it has been a steady month. The St John Wairarapa Charity tournament proved again to be successful thanks to Terry Blacktop and his band of willing workers together with the sponsors who make this event possible and of course the club’s support.

Both Tuesday’s Grumpy’s and the Thursday Club continue to rock with a good turn out of golfers on both days every week. The ladies too are still as strong as ever in both 9 and 18 hole events with good numbers venturing out on Wednesdays despite the ugly weather we have been experiencing lately.

Featherston and Martinborough combined their Easter tournaments over the holiday break and despite a few teething problems it is being hailed as a very successful tournament for both clubs.

Johnson Williams from Featherston was the eventual winner and took home the main prize.
Junior golf is also in good shape and the boys are leading their pennants competition at the moment. The Junior Open sponsored by Jeff Barber will be held on 28 April and no doubt will be just as successful as it has been in previous years. Sadly, George Wilkins one of the club’s promising juniors; and his family are moving to Canada shortly so we extend best wishes to them and George, we hope you continue with your golfing over there.

Finally, a rather nice pair of golf shoes has ‘walked’ from outside the front entrance to the club; the owner would like them returned please.

Good Golfing & Good Luck Kevin Campbell
