Wharekaka Manager Corlette Doherty ever so carefully holds the $175,000 Melbourne cup watched by jockey Michael Clark, tour manager Joe McGrath and Tauherenikau Jubilee convener Graham Hodder.

The Melbourne Cup in all its 18 carat gold glory was on display at the Wharekaka Aged Care Facility on Sunday the 27th of July, just one of many stops on this years Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.

Residents, staff, family and friends gathered together in the dining room eager for a chance to see and perhaps even hold what many consider to be the worlds most coveted trophy.

The event kicked off with speeches from Tour Manager Joe McGrath and 1986 Melbourne Cup winning Jockey Michael Clarke. Both men spoke to those present about the history of the cup and most importantly what its like to win!

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for, a chance to hold the trophy. Donning a white glove each resident had a chance to see the cup up close, hold it and have his or her photo taken!

All of this would not be complete without some race day worthy fashion and flair. The residents and staff alike enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and wear some adventurous hats and fabulous fascinators.
The event was a huge success and Wharekaka would like to extend our thanks to Victoria Racing Club, Wairarapa Racing Club and Trust House Wairarapa for giving us the opportunity to hold such a wonderful and prestigious event.

Our thanks also go to Fiona Beattie and Donald Yee for taking photographs of our residents with the cup. Their presence was much appreciated.
