News from First Church

February 9, 2015 February 2015 No Comments

We’ve recently been reviewing 2014 with all its happy and sad times, its busy times and quieter times of caring fellowship. It’s been good to recall our activities outside the church – Country fairs, Book Sale and Kirk Fair and how successfully members and supporters worked together for great results – and not just financial but giving the opportunity to be identified and interacting with our community.

As 2014 drew to an end, we acknowledged the passing of two wonderful supporters of our church. Barbara Evans in March and Joan Gibson in December. We celebrated the contribution of these two very fine ladies both to the church and our community.

As was said at the service celebrating Joan’s life: “She was a prime mover in two very significant areas – she led the move to establish The Friendship Club, inspiring and enlisting the support for this monthly club for the elderly and those living alone to meet for shared lunches, outings and companionship. The Friendship Club continues today, having celebrated 25 years. Joan’s other achievement was her work with others on the committee formed to bring about our purpose built first class medical centre here in Martinborough, opened 7 years ago, in 2008.”

It has been truly remarkable how church people and friends have been like a family in these and other situations, bringing us all together as we cope, help and support one another.

We have welcomed new people, and are in good heart as we enter into this New Year beginning as always with our stall in the Square at the two Country Fairs in February and March.

Thanking all who continue to make First Church a happening place, with thoughtful and caring people. We are grateful for the loyal service of our Minister Jim Veitch, always encouraging and inspiring.

Today is the only day we’ve got, tomorrow’s a bonus
Or to put it another way: Yesterday is a cancelled cheque.

Tomorrow is a promissory note
Today is ready cash………let’s use it
