Over The Hill

March 8, 2022 March 2022 No Comments

There was some excellent tennis played at this year’s Over the Hill tournament which was held at the Martinborough Tennis Club on January 8th and 9th.

The weather was perfect with the tournament tempting some top players from Wellington to make the trip over for the annual event which features mens’ and ladies’ doubles games, and also mixed doubles games.

Winners included Jason Canning and Marc Paulik in the Mens Doubles while the Ladies Doubles were won by Tania Martin and Jane Pannu. Tania Martin featured again in the Mixed Doubles, winning that with Craig Giddy.  They and the other competitors were up against some excellent local players with the Martinborough team of Charlie Cresswell and Katherine Jacobs taking out the Mixed Doubles – Plate.

It’s a fun weekend for players who are guaranteed three matches each on both Saturday and Sunday, and there were plenty of spectators enjoying a picnic under the shade of the trees as they watched the locals take on the competition.

The club was looking the best it has done in quite a while due to the dedicated efforts of the club committee, and a special shout out to Ed Isaacs who spent many hours working to get the grounds and the clubhouse in great shape ahead of the tournament.  Thanks also to all the other club members and volunteers who helped run another successful event under Covid protocols.

A special thanks for our main sponsors Pain & Kershaw, Palliser Wines, Tora Walk and the Martinborough Hotel, and to the other sponsors who donated prizes for raffles and for the winners.

If you’re interested in playing tennis, the Martinborough Tennis Club is really friendly and offers courts for members along with Summer Evening Tennis on Tuesday and Wednesday, Active Tennis, and other events.  The club also really welcomes juniors and offers full, family, and midweek membership.  You can find out more by checking out the website https://clubspark.kiwi/MartinbroughTennisClub  or contacting us at martinboroughtennis@gmail.com.
