Rotary Club of South Wairarapa

September 8, 2014 September 2014 No Comments

South-Wairarapa-Rotary The first month of the new year under President Griff Page has gone past quickly, Wednesday evenings providing an escape from the winter weather and a chance to catch up with the other Rotarians over a meal. Most Wednesday evenings we meet at the Greytown Working Men’s Club and have a guest speaker along.
One of our more entertaining speakers was Mike Van Woerkom who came to speak to us about the work he does organising the Math’s Fair for a number of schools in the Wairarapa. The club has donated monies to the Math’s Fair in the past, and now Mike was bringing us up to speed with what the Fair’s are actually all about.
And bring us up to speed, he certainly did. Mike ran the club members through one of the exercises, and due to the number of years that had passed since we had been to school it wasn’t an easy task – but certainly fun.

Other speakers that we have had during July were Jan Nye & Rob Joiner who gave us an insight into life in East Timor. Jan spoke about her various roles in healthcare, education and consultancy while Rob illustrated the time with photos of the locals, their homes and the scenery. Ro Griffith & Max Stephens also kept us up to date with details of the Martinborough Town Hall project.

Outside of the Wednesday night meetings planning is underway for assistance with the annual collection for Parkinsons Wairarapa, helping with the annual daffodil pick on the Sutherland property at Whangaimoana and the running of the annual Martinborough Charity Fun Ride, a bike ride that has been running for over 20 years in the South Wairarapa. The club members have taken up the running of this event and are busy getting a new web-site built ready for the keen and eager cyclists out there.
