South Wairarapa Tramping Club

September 8, 2014 September 2014 No Comments

Due to a combination of unfriendly winter weather, school holidays and grandparent duties there was no official programme of trips for August. Despite this the club managed to arrange a couple of trips at short notice.
On 28 June a group of seven travelled up the Mangatoetoe River to the Mangatoetoe Hut and return. Most of the trip in was in or across the Mangatoetoe River but the group enjoyed a lunch in the sun at Mangatoetoe Hut, which is presently being restored. The trip out was easier via an alternative and drier track.
On 5 July a group of eleven enjoyed the popular Miki Miki – Kiriwhakapapa and return trip. The weather was a bit dodgy but the beauty and variety of the bush, together with the historical significance of the route, ensured another good day’s walk.
On 16 August a smaller group defied the weather forecast and did the Pinnacles- Ngawi track. In the event, the weather held and the group enjoyed the superb views that this track offers.
On 23 August a group of four climbed Mt Reeves in the southern Tararuas. The weather was not ideal – fast moving mist and drizzle – so the views were minimal. However, it is an interesting track and the group were well satisfied with the day.
Trips planned for September include the following:
6 September – Rimutaka Summit/trig pylon track – leader Barry Kempton, ph 06 304 9353 (medium fitness)
13 September – White Rock towards Tora and return – leader Bill Dolan, ph 06 306 9221 (easy)
20 September – Hutt River – leaders Ed and Juliet Cooke, ph 06 304 9497 (medium fitness)
27 September – Cone Hut, Tararuas – leader Clive Baxter, ph 06 308 9313 (fit)
Interested persons are most welcome. Please phone the nominated leader by the Thursday evening prior to the trip.
Please phone Lynne King for upcoming details and confirmations (04 478 7795).
For general enquiries regarding the club’s activities call Ed Cooke, Club President (06 304 9497) or Carol Major, Club Secretary (06 304 8210).
