South Wairarapa Tramping Club

December 16, 2014 December 2014 No Comments

November turned out to be tempestuous month and several trips were modified or postponed until the weather settles down. Nevertheless, the club managed some worthwhile trips.

On 25 October nine members enjoyed a fine weather walk on the Hutt River Trail (Te Marua, Totara Park and Akatarawa). The trip confirmed members’ views that the Upper Hutt Valley offers some excellent walking opportunities.
On 1 November seven people completed the Mt Kaiparoro circuit (Tararuas, Mt Bruce vicinity) in marginal weather. Despite this the trip afforded some excellent views.

On 8 November, seven members did the Wellington Skyline Walkway. Contrary to expectations the wind stayed away and the group enjoyed near perfect conditions and exceptional sea views.

On 22 November the scheduled trip around the northern end of Lake Wairarapa was postponed because of wind and rain and the group of seven sought the shelter of Fensham Reserve (west of Carterton) and the Millenium Reserve in Masterton. The substitute trips, though gentle, made the best of the conditions on the day.

Trips planned for December include the following:
6 December – Wainuiomata coastal walk (from the Wainui end) – leader Juliet Cooke – Ph. 06 304 9497 – medium fitness.
13 December – Ruakokoputuna Chasm – leaders Ian and Rosie Montgomerie – ph. 06 304 9252 – easy.
20 December – Jury Hill (Ponatahi, east of Greytown) – leader to be nominated.
There will be no trips on 27 December and 3 January.

Interested persons are most welcome. Please phone the nominated leader by the Thursday evening prior to the trip for trip details and weather outlook.

Please phone Lynne King for upcoming details and confirmations (04 478 7795).

For general enquiries regarding the club’s activities call Ed Cooke, Club President (06 304 9497) or Carol Major, Club Secretary, (06 304 8210).
