What a busy year

March 10, 2014 March 2014, Regular Features No Comments

What-a-busy-yearWhat a busy year it has been in the libraay so far. Since we moved to the new premises adjoining the Village Café we have so many more customers that the library is buzzing with people most of the time.
We still have a small issue with road signage but this is being sorted out as I write and hopefully newcomers will soon be able to find us much easier than in the past.

We were fortunate in February to become quite involved in community events. We hosted a book launch for The secret life of sheepdogs by Anneleise Hall – our lovely local author who drew all the pictures and wrote the verse for this gorgeous picture book.

The librarians have also been involved in the launch of the new Word club run by John Ansell. I was privileged to launch the book club with a talk about shoes, of course – what else would I talk about! We also had a blind date session on Valentine’s day. A ‘blind date with a book’ which was fun.

On the 5th March is World Read Aloud Day and the library will resound with words all day as volunteers read aloud their favourite poems, books, newspaper articles or anything else that they would like. With luck we will have enough volunteers to have a 9.30 to 5 marathon session.

Talking about volunteers, we have several brave souls helping us with all those little tasks that would otherwise not be done. Rose joins us two mornings a week and cleans books or tidies shelves and Alex joins us between University stints sorting shelves and helping me get the Science Fiction area up to scratch. We will also shortly have a teen helper doing community service for Duke of Edinburgh. My thanks to our volunteers who help make the library a fun place to be.
Talking of fun – do join us on Tuesday mornings at 10 for a bit of baby bouncing. The pre-school session is booming with anything from 10 to 20 wee ones each Tuesday. Ages range from 3 weeks to 4 years old coming especially to listen to Janet reading and dance to the music. It’s a very friendly and happy group of mums who generally carry on after the session with coffee and a chat.

If you are new to Martinborough there is no better place to meet other mums and babies. We are lucky to be able to use the garden area in good weather and it is lovely sitting beneath the pergola in the open air making lots of noise!
We are currently doing a revamp of the magazines and romance sections so do come in and see what is happening. There is so much to see and find in your library.
