The team on May Anna’s fourteenth birthday

The team on May Anna’s fourteenth birthday

Martinborough Junior Hockey has made a positive start to the 2016 season. We have 50 members this year, mostly from Martinborough School, with three 6-aside teams and two 11-aside teams entered in the primary competition at Clareville.
So far, our 1st XI team remains unbeaten in the B grade with convincing wins against Coasties Green (12-0), Hadlow 2nd XI (8-1) and Kahutara 1st XI (6-1). The team’s goalie, Delta Hutchings, attended a goalie clinic run by Hockey Wairarapa and the team is already reaping the benefit from the skills and confidence she gained at the course. Jamie McLeod continues to be a dominant force; you do not want to be in the firing line of his penalty strike! The Martinborough Black team plays in the 11-aside C grade on Saturday mornings and our three 6-aside teams (varying in age from years 1 to 5) are spread across all grades.

Last November, we received a grant from the Trust House Foundation towards our new 11-aside team shirts. These have been ordered and we are waiting for them to arrive; they are going to look extremely smart on the turf with our new white socks to match.

Congratulations to Dennis from Carterton who won our “Big Bunny” Easter raffle in March. Thank you to everyone who took a ticket. Many of you will know Dennis’ daughter, Crystal, from the Wild Oats Cafe and coffee cart. The club then pulled out its best baking skills to provide the cakes and slices at the Tokaroa Farm open day on 29 April.

The money raised from these two fundraising opportunities will be used to pay for our practice turf fees at Kuranui College and the Martinborough Tennis Club. Please support the Tennis Club to raise the final amount of money they need for their new astro turf. This will be a wonderful asset to the wider community with clubs like us benefitting as well.

Remember that Martinborough Hockey welcomes players from all schools. Our vision is to encourage as many children as possible to play and enjoy the game of hockey. Please contact Pippa Broom (co-ordinator for Martinborough Hockey) on 06 306 8880 if you have any queries.
