2014 MARKS CHANGE for NZ RED CROSS
February 22nd was a poignant day for all New Zealanders but of course particularly for our Christchurch friends. It’s been three years since the disastrous earthquake resulting in the death of so many people and a ‘life-change’ for thousands more.
The anniversary also marked a change in focus for the NZ Red Cross Recovery programme. From the incredible $128million raised, $89million has already been paid out in grants to over 100,000 people – representing over a quarter of the city’s population. Nearly half of that went in the first eight weeks following the earthquake. A further $14.6million has been promised and will be distributed soon.
The Red Cross is now shifting its focus to the development of sustainable programmes to help in the Christchurch rebuild into a vibrant and beautiful city. The programmes will be developed in conjunction with other organisations and partners; and of course keeping to its essential principles. The fact that there was money left over was a result of the amazing generosity of NZers and people from other countries – even Japan – responding to the 2012 Appeal.
MARCH is National Appeal month. Martinborough Red Cross hopes our local folk will be generous again! The street collection will be on FRIDAY 14th MARCH. We’ll be hard to miss so pay us a visit and help the Red Cross.
