A charitable lot
There are twenty eight thousand charities registered for tax purposes in New Zealand with donations received exceeding four billion dollars. Two hundred thousand volunteers are working for these charitable organisations.
The criteria be listed as a charity was establish under Queen Elizabeth with the charities act of 1601. These were further established by an English test case in 1891. New Zealand now operates under the NZ Charities Act of 2005.
New Zealand listed charities have assets exceeding sixty billion dollars. While the vast majority are hand to mouth organisations using all the money received for their stated purpose there is concern that a small number are heavily involved in commercial undertakings.
The charities commission is charged with checking all registered charities for irregularities but to date only four charities have been deregistered.
