An afternoon with 20 languages
More than 20 residents of Wairarapa will offer kōrero, songs and poems in more than 20 languages on the same afternoon.
Kaumatua Mike Kawana will open the event.
“Wairarapa Worlds” will feature te reo, Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, German, Greek, Indian, Irish, Japanese, Kiribati, Latvian, Polish, Samoan, Scots, Spanish, Tagalog and maybe a few more!
Wairarapa Worlds was initiated by writer and photographer Madeleine Slavick, who reached out to Wairarapa Archive, Wairarapa Word, Aratoi and Masterton Creative Communities for support.
“I wanted to acknowledge the cultures that have been part of Wairarapa over time,” said Slavick. “I wanted to acknowledge that Whakaoriori Masterton has been selected as a resettlement community and will be welcoming refugees from Syria. I wanted to mark Phantom Billstickers National Poetry D
“Personally, I love listening to other languages. My whānau here in Aotearoa, Brasil and the United States have different proficiencies of French, Italian, Japanese, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. I’ve studied te reo for a few months, and over lockdown, I completed a course in Tikanga Māori.”
Everyone is invited to “Wairarapa Worlds” on Friday, 21 August, from 12-2pm at Aratoi, in the Wesley Wing. All welcome / Koha.
