At DOT Kids Early Learning Centre…
During August there has been a big focus on rhymes and traditional stories such as ‘the Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. This helps to promote early literacy and maths as the children develop their language and thinking skills.
Children have been read these stories, and have been told them through the use of magnetic board resources and puppets. This has led to groups of children putting on plays or spontaneously acting out the rhymes and stories both inside and out in the playground. Maths is being used in a lot of the stories and rhymes, for example: the counting and subtracting that occurs when the children are ‘monkeys jumping on the bed and falling off’, or ‘the first little pig went out…’
Every Friday morning a small group have been visiting Room 8 at Martinborough School for Buddy reading when the seven and eight year olds read stories to the younger children. This aids valuable learning in literacy, as well as promotes a good transition as they get to meet other children and the teachers at the school, and become familiar with the school environment.
