Bizarre
In 1990 NZ found itself tripped up by it’s anti nuclear ship ban legislation.
Queen Elizabeth planned to visit aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia for the 150th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Britannia was officially commissioned vessel of the Royal Navy. NZ law requires every naval vessel of any nation to formally guarantee that the ship is not carrying a nuclear weapon.
The Royal Navy has the same policy as the U.S. Navy and refused to confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons on the Queen’s yacht. Prime Minister David Lange refused entry and the Britannia steered clear of NZ waters for this leg of the Royal Tour.
