Awesome Scouts
Max thinks Scouts is ‘awesome!’ What boy wouldn’t have loved the recent Greytown Scouts event down at the Waiohine River, which saw the group test drive two rafts they’d built the week before, then cap this off with an egg fight. Add to this the annual Mudslide at Gladstone, and a camp at Wainuiomata. These are just some of the fun activities rolled out by the group, which not only entertain the children but also teach them life skills like bush craft, respect for the environment, keeping fit and healthy, and contributing to the community.
The Greytown Scout Troop is a friendly, dynamic and well-run group, now catering for 19 Wairarapa boys and girls, but there is room for more young people to enjoy the fun activities, awesome adventures and practical life skills on offer. Group Leader Tony Allen is keen to hear from those interested. Cubs and Venturers are also run from the Hall in Kuratawhiti St, meaning that people from Year 3 to Year 13 are catered for.
Greytown Scouts is run by Brendon McMahon, from Martinborough. Brendon decided to become a leader after enjoying Scouts and Ventuers in his youth. His two daughters are now involved in the Greytown packs. Brendon is assisted by Collier Issacs, with regular help from parents, and two Venturers will also be helping, providing great role models for the young ones. “I think Cubs and Scouts has moved on quite a lot from what it used to be,” says one of the mothers. “It’s been great for my son to be working on different challenges alongside the leaders and young people that we have met on events like our fundraising work for Toast Martinborough.” Tramps and camping is another plus, especially for children of families who are not set up for or able to do this independently.
