Brian Connor Artist

February 11, 2019 February 2019 No Comments

Martinborough photographic artist Brian Connor will be exhibiting his work at Carterton’s Heart of Arts Gallery. Enitiled ‘Moments of Vision – an exhibition of aspiring imagery’ it will be held between 15th February and 13th March.

Brian Connor is a retired atmospheric scientist, formerly with NASA in the US, then NIWA in New Zealand. He now lives in Martinborough, and spends his time on art photography. His work has been exhibited locally and in the US, published internationally, and received awards and nominations in international contests. His specialties include fine art nude and local landscapes, as will be seen in this exhibition.

Brian photographs and process images which move him, and hopes the results are evocative and moving to viewers as well.

New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes have fascinated Brian since his first visit here in 1986. He moved to New Zealand twenty four years ago, in part because he was fascinated by views of the landscape, with its fine detail revealed by the remarkably clear air and gorgeous light. I have only begun to explore how best to capture that in digital imagery.

Brian believes the female nude is one of art’s most enduring subjects, and, in his opinion, one of life’s most beautiful sights. “It evokes a deep emotional response, which I can only describe by saying it moves my spirit and inspires a sense of wonder. My photography of the nude is my attempt to express those feelings, and maybe to convey some of them to the viewer.

“Nude allegories express the desirable and the good … because we cast our aspirations in images that transcend the limits of what we know and live”.

The exhibition will include a painting by Christie Wright, inspired by and based in part on three of Brian’s  images. Christie is a full-time artist living in Napier. She is known for beautiful murals in and around Wellington and the Hawkes Bay.
