First Church News

Not so long ago when we got into the month of April, there was a feeling that the town would be settling down after all the many and varied Summer events that locals and visitors had enjoyed. But this year there is still a great buzz with a full programme ahead of us – coinciding with Easter we have the Ballooon Festival, the Wairarapa Garden Trail, Farmers Markets and Country Fairs, and as the month goes on many celebrations of art, music and literature, and of course the increasingly popular cycling. … Continue Reading

A busy start to the year

April 10, 2018 April 2018 Comments Off on A busy start to the year

With the new year now under way at Wharekaka we have had some lovely trips out to the Pinnacles and Lake Ferry. At times the heat has been hard and ice creams and fans have been the only way to go.

Wharekaka Auxiliary held a beautiful picnic for the residents in Wharekaka grounds which was enjoyed by all and a great start to the year. Thanks to all involved. Residents enjoyed a BBQ under the trees and watched the Cycle racing go by. Lionel Parkinson’s great nephew taking many of the prizes made it all the more exciting.

Thanks to Paul Hocking for the generous donation of a TV for the residents and the team at Neighbourhood Café for the lovely scones for our residents’ morning teas and Connor from Pain and Kershaw for the delicious goodies you donate to our home.  These along with the donations of surplus garden produce from Martinborough residents is truly appreciated.

Wharekaka was sad to farewell both Toni Pyl and Bruce Johns who passed away recently and Jan MacTaggart who moved to Australia to be closer to family.

We have welcomed some new faces in our Villas.  Bill and Catherine Cox, Heather Draper and Jim Doohan have become a part of our larger Wharekaka family.

Residents are encouraged to join in our weekly activities of Pilates, Tai Chi, Bowls and Crosswords.  Arbor House and Roseneath Lifecare have recently joined us for afternoon tea and entertainment by Lance Naysmith.  These visits are always enjoyed as old friendships are rekindled and fun is had by all. … Continue Reading

Australia’s last GM free state

April 10, 2018 April 2018 Comments Off on Australia’s last GM free state

South Australia  crop farmers are pushing their  state government to  repeal the state’s GM ban claiming that it is keeping their per hectare yields lower than the other those of the other states.

They point out that world wide there are 185 million hectares of land  growing GM crops some for over twenty years. These crops are helping 18 million farmers in 26 countries produce more much needed food.

However opponents  point to the advantages of being able to label their crops GM free. World GM trade is expected to double from $676 billion in 2014 to $1,200 billion in 2019 .
