Bowling Club

December 14, 2016 December 2016, Sports Comments Off on Bowling Club

The Martinborough Bowling Club has recommenced activities following it’s recent winter hiatus .A healthy number of bowlers turned out recently for the annual Scotties Meats gala triples .
With rainy weather covering most of the Wairarapa area , it was fortunate that Martinborough was spared the inclement weather for this occasion. All players enjoyed a fun day of bowls on the clubs premises in what has become a very popular event on the bowls calendar .
Winners of the day were Steve Shaw , Hayden Frew and the mercurial Peter ” Rabbs” Ireland .
Thursday business house twilight triples has had mixed fortunes with the weather and organizers are hoping for a little more stability on that factor in the coming weeks . Play commences around six pm and anyone interested in can be at the club at 5.30 .
With the Christmas break almost upon us the club extends seasons greetings to all readers .

A great holiday read

The quirky title of this book caught my eye, and then the blurb on the back cover sealed my curiosity. I was not to be disappointed. To say that this book is different would be an understatement.
Set in Scotland the tale revolves around the activities of an impressive psychic and along the way encompasses a university, politics, a newspaper reporter, forgery, a doctor, debating professors and even a (gentle) murder.
All mixed with some interesting philosophy and a good dose of mystery.

The story is based around an offer to set up a university department to study the paranormal. As a very rich businessman with a personal interest in the world of psychics has agreed to provide the funding the university readily agreed to the new department. The problem arose when the philanthropist insisted that the it be part of the University’s science suite. However the science professors totally rejected this arguing that it was not a scientific subject. … Continue Reading

Local Government NZ have had Colmar Brunton do a large survey of NZ residents and businesses on local government. The initial results aren’t complimentary but it is a smart move by LGNZ to do such research, because it provides a benchmark to try and improve against for their member governments. … Continue Reading

The Lubetkin legacy

December 14, 2016 December 2016 Comments Off on The Lubetkin legacy

book-review-2Marina Lewycka has done it again, anyone who enjoyed her Short history of tractors in Ukraine* will love this. Here again is a book which has everything, humour, pathos, joy, and page turning tension all wrapped together with an excellent story line.

The setting for the story is a 1950s London Council housing block with its widely varied assortment of tenants. Among these occupants are a couple of Ukraine grandmothers, one with her permanently out of work actor son living with her, a wheelchair bound diabetic man, a young Kenyan lady office worker, a solo dad with son and a universally disliked gossip. The only person even less liked is the council officer in charge of the block. … Continue Reading

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1.
