February has seen this lovely warm summer continue, and Martinborough is still very busy with lots of visitors enjoying all that our lovely region has to offer.
First Church too has been seeing new faces as people staying in town join us in a Sunday service – it’s always interesting to meet them and hear where they’re from, what brings them to Martinborough, sometimes as part of a local wedding, and sometimes discover that they have a family connection with the area.

Recently we met a couple a couple who were married in First Church almost 50 years ago! It’s amazing how easy it is to make connections, finding people and places in common. Truly strangers are simply friends we haven’t met! … Continue Reading

Resilient thinking puts farmers ahead of the game

March 15, 2016 March 2016 Comments Off on Resilient thinking puts farmers ahead of the game

Farmers are being treated to an impressive line-up of expert speakers at the 2016 “Farming for the Future” seminar, Carterton Events Centre, Tuesday 8 March. The theme “Resilient farms – Risks, Returns and Responsibilities” will focus farmers’ attention on the dynamic space they operate in and help them explore responses to ensure the sustainability of their farming business.

“Volatile economic and environmental conditions are now forcing farm systems to demonstrate efficient resource use to stay ahead of the game”, says Wairarapa farmer and Ruamahanga Whaitua Chairperson, Peter Gawith. “Business resilience helps farmers to ‘roll with the punches’ when factors change which are beyond their control”. … Continue Reading

1942 earthquake memories

Frank Mills Part 2
Biking down to Jellicoe Street I noticed how all the chimneys were down. What a smell was coming from Charlie Poulter’s the Chemist shop where all the bottles of medicine had fallen on the floor and broken.  His windows and all the other windows in the block were smashed.
There were bricks and rubble all over the left hand side of the road and I had to ride right over on the other side to get to the Square. At the Martinborough Hotel was another big smell as all the bottles of booze had fallen and broken.

Bill Shore, the other delivery boy and I waited at Adam Wright’s, the newsagents next door to the hotel for the papers to arrive from Featherston.
The Post Office clock had stopped at 16 minutes past 11 and stayed that way for weeks, a reminder of when the quakes started. … Continue Reading

MartinBoroughTownHallCC_V01_ExteriorOn the 24th of February Stage One of the new Waihinga Centre Project was given the green light in a unanimous decision by South Wairarapa District Council. This marks an important moment for Martinborough, representing the development of the first new major public building in the town for many years.

The existing Town Hall will be strengthened and upgraded to make the building accessible and usable for all sectors of the local community, wider region and visitors. This will see the legacy of this landmark continue into the 21st century. The new adjacent building will provide spacious, purpose-designed spaces for the Library, Plunket, the Toy Library and the i-Site as well as attractive seating outside. It will open up the old Town Hall for use during the day for community groups and organisations and social gatherings as well as providing a space for larger events such as Round the Vines and the Martinborough Fairs. … Continue Reading

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1.
