FALCONS IN MARTINBOROUGH

Our speaker this month was Jane Lenting speaking on her work with Falcons in Martinborough. Falcons are mostly found in more remote parts of New Zealand but are ideally suited to life in a wine-growing regions as they prey on pest birds (blackbirds, starlings etc). The Karearea reintroduction which Jane is leading here in Martinborough has its basis in an older Marlborough vineyard project.

Jane is Cellar Master at Palliser Estate Vineyard which is a big vineyard plagued with small pest birds leading up to the harvest. Falcons differ from hawks in that in general hawks like road kill while falcons like to catch their prey on the wing. The Karearea or small bush falcon is more common in the Wairarapa area.

Three chicks hatched at Wingspan Rotorua were offered to the South Wairarapa programme. Falconry is an ancient activity and the Rotorua people are very experienced in handling the falcons. … Continue Reading

South Wairarapa Rotary

March 15, 2016 March 2016 Comments Off on South Wairarapa Rotary

One Fair down, and one still to go – 2016 is the 40th year that the Rotary Club of South Wairarapa has run the Martinborough Fair. Way back when the Fair attracted about 35 stall holders mainly local people displaying, and selling, their crafts. Now there are about 500 stalls focused on the square and surrounding streets in the middle of Martinborough. Anywhere between 20 & 30,000 people visit the Fair each time from all over the lower half of the North Island and stall holders travel from all over New Zealand to exhibit at the Fair.
Why do we do it you might ask, getting up early in the morning to be at the Fair by 5:30 am to direct the stall holders where their site is. It’s so we can raise money to return back to the South Wairarapa Community in one way or another. The last few years has averaged about $80,000 being raised by the Fair and 99% of that ends up back in the community or towards a few International charities that the club routinely supports. … Continue Reading

Summer-funWelcome back to all our toy library families after such a long hot summer break that seems to be continuing! We are always looking for new families to enjoy our toys so if you haven’t already please come along and have a look at our toys, there’s lots of them!

Martinborough Toy Library is a community run charity that provides toys for ages 0-7 years. We have a great selection of toys, large outdoor toys great for this time of year, as well as smaller toys great for indoors. Our hire rates are very reasonable, ranging from .50c to $2.00 for two weeks hire. We are open on Saturdays 10-12 at the back of First Church hall on Weld St.
New to the toy library is our recently acquired bouncy castle. This is now available for hire for just $75 for a whole day, so please get in touch with us at martytoylibrary@gmail.com. It’s great for birthday parties! Huge thanks to Trust House for their grant which enabled us to purchase this. We hope that it gets lots of use and if it goes well who knows we’ll just have to get another one! … Continue Reading
