NZ Symphony Orchestra Associate Concertmaster Joins The Martinborough Music Festival Team

March 15, 2023 March 2023 Comments Off on NZ Symphony Orchestra Associate Concertmaster Joins The Martinborough Music Festival Team

Donald Armstrong.

The Trust Board of the Martinborough Music Festival (MMF) is delighted that Donald Armstrong, the NZ Symphony Orchestra Associate Concertmaster, has accepted the position of Festival Co-Artistic Director. This position was vacated by Vicki Jones who resigned last December.

Donald joins Wilma Smith as Co-Artistic Director. He says “I could not think of a more wonderful person to work with. Wilma and I go back to teenage years. We sat together at the front of the NZ Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and have stayed in touch over our careers. I am also excited to carry on the work of Vicki Jones. She, along with all the Martinborough crew, have created a wonderfully attractive festival”.

Born into a musical family, Donald began learning the violin when he was seven. “I have never regretted learning the violin, it suits my character”. He began his professional studies with the Schola Musica (NZBC Orchestra trainees) and the National Youth Orchestra. At 19, he joined the NZ Symphony Orchestra. From this time, Donald has been on an upward trajectory with his career winning prizes and scholarships in New Zealand and at prestigious institutions overseas. He held key orchestral positions in Denmark and France.

On his return to New Zealand in 1987 he was appointed Associate Concertmaster of the NZSO, a position he still holds. Conducting is something else Donald does regularly as well as performing as a soloist. After 36 years, the Amici Ensemble which he founded, is still going strong. Donald plays a violin by Nicolo Gagliano of 1754. … Continue Reading

NEWS FROM FIRST CHURCH

March 15, 2023 March 2023, Regular Features Comments Off on NEWS FROM FIRST CHURCH

Our Sunday services have almost become a “drop in” café, as visitors to town join us in our hall for a relaxed and friendly time of worship with morning tea.  It is always very interesting to meet new people, hear where they’re from and what brings them to Martinborough.

Sometimes there are family connections, and fascinating stories are told.  In First Church’s 150 plus years, it has played a part in the lives of many people and families who grew up in and around Martinborough through weddings, baptisms, Sunday School, Bible Class and all the social life that revolves around a parish church which is so much a part of the history of the town.

The First Church Country stall had a very successful day in February, and we are looking forward to the second Fair Day on Saturday 4th March – sunshine please, but whatever the weather we will be there. … Continue Reading

MARTINBOROUGH WINE AND FOOD FEBRUARY MEETING

March 15, 2023 March 2023, Regular Features Comments Off on MARTINBOROUGH WINE AND FOOD FEBRUARY MEETING

Our President Philippa Pointon. David & Antoinette Pheasant (incognito). Willie Sutherland (In fancy dress).

We held the annual garden party at committee member David Woodhams house in January. It was a very hot day and the house with its large verandas makes it a very attractive venue. The garden also has an extremely beautiful eucalypt tree which appears to reach right up into the sky. Members brought finger food and wine and had a very enjoyable afternoon.

Next month we are off to a restaurant. If you would be interested in becoming a member please ring Philippa on 021434163 or Dave on 0274530475.
