Martinborough Golf Club Report

It is incredible to see the course so green at this time of year – you can almost see the grass growing in front of your eyes!

After the very successful Pro Am at the end of January the interclub boys were straight into their matches.  Both Division 3 and Division 10 have had 3 games with both teams having 2 wins and 1 loss.

Ladies interclub also started at the end of January with the Silvers having a number of close matches as have the Combo team.

Club Opening Day had a good turnout and the competition was Mystery Partner 4BBB with no one knowing who their partner was.  The winners on the day were:

Best Gross Shane Colton & Robbie Robinson, 2^nd Brian Russo & Netia Morison, 3^rd John Warner & Tora Boyne and 4^th George Fenwick & Vern Anton.  Best Nett went to Brett Abercrombie & Michael Griffiths, 2^nd Mark Mason & Honor Clark, 3^rd Rosie Collins & Whitney Griffiths and 4^th Lyle Griffiths & Malcolm Bridge.  Best Stableford went to Andy Morison & Sarah Monaghan, 2^nd Marilyn MacKenzie & Robbie Walters, 3^rd Julie Dondertman & Shayne Hammond and 4^th Carol Parkinson & John Monaghan.  Nearest the pins went to Robbie Walters #6, Sarah Monaghan #8, Michael Bing #12 and Josh Moorby #16.  Twos went to Sandra Petersen, Paul McKenzie, Sarah Monaghan and Lyle Griffiths. … Continue Reading

Cyclone Gabrielle has been a reminder that business continuity is a key business requirement in today’s times.

We are still dealing with the aftershocks of the Covid-19 pandemic with inflation soaring, interest rates “doubling”, fuel challenges and the overall cost of living spiralling all negatively impacting many people and families. Yet along comes a weather event producing the most powerful and destructive forces that we have ever experienced in our lifetimes in New Zealand / Aotearoa turning our lives and businesses upside down again.

Here in Martinborough, we got off lightly but in the wider Wairarapa not so. Our thoughts and support go out to those affected. Supply arrangements were hampered for a couple of days with the main Waihenga bridge being closed due to flooding. However, supplies from the Hawkes Bay and Auckland growers will have a flow effect on our supply chain so be prepared as customers for some shortages.

We throw the word resilience around a lot these days but it’s absolutely a necessity for business owners to ensure continuity and resilience testing for their businesses. In our small community, we can help our providers and community by shopping locally as much as we can and buying only what we need.

Canada’s golden spike

The Canadian coast to coast railway was completed on the 7^th November 1885. The government of British Columbia made it a condition of joining the Confederation rather than annexed to the U.S. that they be linked to the rest of the country by a railway by 1891.  However the work was completed five years early thanks to the efforts of Cornelius van Horne and enthusiastic backer such as Donald A Smith who drove the final ‘golden’ spike. Which was in actual fact iron. The two sides of completed lines met at Craigellachie in the Rockies. The journey from Montreal to Port Moody BC took between five and six days.
