Plunket News

What a busy month April has been for us at Plunket as it has been the Annual Appeal Month. Our group has had great support from the community and we thank you for your part in that.

The raffle raised over $700 to go toward “Upgrading Plunket Room Furniture – With Parent and Child-Friendly Focus”. It is exciting to be able to begin our journey of providing improved, comfortable, breast-feeding chairs and to increase our child-friendly furniture as it has been a long time since we have been able to address this issue. We have some important thanks to convey to our sponsors, and to communicate with the public so that you know who have assisted us:
* Luke Atkinson (06 3709234) – for the donation, loading and transporting of the firewood.
* Mitre 10 – for lending us the trailer for over a month, saving us the task of unloading and reloading firewood.
* Antoni Smolnicki – for approaching us with the offer of a prize for a Therapeutic Massage.
* Community people who donated items for collective raffle prizes.
* The women who gave of their time to sell raffle tickets – even when it was really chilly!
* Sue Sullivan of Kitcheners for officiating as our raffle prize drawer.

This has certainly been a community effort that will benefit Martinborough. … Continue Reading

Remembering dreams come true.

May 9, 2016 May 2016 Comments Off on Remembering dreams come true.

“You don’t really know much about someone’s past until you learn about it.” Wise words from Joan Leach, a current resident at Wharekaka Rest Home, Martinborough. The residents at Wharekaka are just regular people some of whom have lived extraordinary lives. Memories of loved ones, jobs and adventures are the wise stories that flow. I spoke to Joan Leach and Jan MacTaggart about their jobs, hobbies and origins.

Jan MacTaggart is from Australia, she became a nurse and said that was the only profession she ever had an interest in. When she was about four years old most girls were having tea parties with their dolls. Jan however, played hospital with hers.
This passion for nursing was a surpriseas the only person she knew had a medical profession was her cousin. Nursing was her calling and she ran towards it with gusto. She made a few friends whilst training in medical school which grew from their shared passion for nursing. She described her time at the New South Wales Crown Sreet, Royal Adelaide, and Port Lincoln Hospitals as the best. “All I ever wanted to do was nursing and I did it…and I loved every minute of it.”
Joan worked as a Physiotherapist at Suford Hospital, Manchester England. Her journey in Physiotherapy began after a friend hinted that she steer away from Agricultural and into Medical. … Continue Reading

The Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club is embarking on its biggest redevelopment project for 20 years; resurfacing the 2 astro courts and installing court lighting.

This is a tennis club project with full ownership and control staying with the club. However to increase the use of the courts and open up sporting opportunities in the town, the court set up will be such that both netball and hockey will be able to use them through the winter months. … Continue Reading
