If you haven’t already seen them the town’s eight murals are really worth a look. The production of the murals was arranged by Ventana who are to be warmly thanked for their initiative and then produced by local artists. The murals are at four local businesses: Thunderpants, P&K, Ohio Street shops and Neighbourhood coffee. Plus Te Kairanga, Ata Rangi, Margrain and Palliser vineyards.
The mural illustrated is at Neighbourhood coffee and produced by Lindie and Mike Sleyer, it’s entitled Kiwiana and is a real nostalgia piece. Lindie and Mike are responsible , among many other things, for the design and monthly layout the Star which you receive every month. Over time we have probably become a bit blasé about the quality of the layout produced every month, however visitors frequently comment on it.
Lindie and Mike’s company Dustysandlulu is one of the many Martinborough companies quietly producing high class products and services for clients all over New Zealand. In their case producing branding, illustrations, packaging, print and web design.
The Golden House
I have found this Salman Rushdie book difficult to read but on the other hand hard to put down. The story line is straight forward enough and covers the time between the inauguration of Barrack Obama and that of Donald Trump. A clearly rich man and his three adult sons arrive from an unnamed overseas country to live in an expensive house in New York’s Manhattan.
The family do not speak about their former home country or how they had made their obvious fortune and had changed their surname to Golden. The air of mystery surrounding the family attracts the attention of a young neighbour, a would be screen writer who decides to use the family as a basis for a screen script. … Continue Reading
Sunday the 15th of October was a gloriously sunny day in Martinborough, perfect for the 25 keen gardeners and would-be gardeners who came along to find out about Martinborough’s first community garden. Thanks to the generosity of John Taylor and Jane Owers, the garden will be based at 51 Oxford Street (until some public land can be identified for the longer term).
The main purpose of this project is to create a supply of good fresh produce free to those in the community who might otherwise miss out due to cost or other issues. A team of volunteers will take care of the growing side and the harvest will be distributed as needed, with surpluses also helping stock The Larder at the Health Centre.
An informal committee is in place to do the necessary planning and to help organise the volunteers this summer. The project will start modestly at first, with people meeting a couple of times a week (probably one weekend and one weekday session) to work in the garden. … Continue Reading
