Children’s Nightwear : Keep Kids Safe

Tips on selecting LOW FIRE HAZARD NIGHTWEAR

Look for the label – in New Zealand children’s nightwear that is covered by the Product Safety Standard must carry a fire hazard label and this includes new and second-handchildren’s nightwear & some daywear (sizes 00-14). Included are : pyjamas / nightdresses and nighties / some onesies / nightshirts / dressing gowns / bathrobes / loose style boxer shorts / infant sleeping bags with sleeves or arm openings / blankets or towels with sleeves or arm openings.

If the nightwear’s packaging makes it difficult to see and read the label , the packaging itself must also be clearly marked with the correct fire hazard information .Two Different Labels . . . . WHITE LABEL :  those made from low hazard fabrics and those snug fitting  are marked with a white label that reads “ CAUTION KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT AND FLAME “ . This is your safest option .

RED LABEL : for higher fire hazard risk items ,  are marked as  “ WARNING HIGH FIRE DANGER KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT AND FLAME “

If you see an orange label , this has been phased out and should no longer appear . . .  it meant it is made of a higher risk fabric and is snug fitting .

If clothing doesn’t meet the requirements for either white or red label it is considered to have a very high flammability rating and cannot be sold as nightwear .

Handmade nightwear – for maximum safety choose patterns with snug-fitting designs and look for low hazard fabrics and trims .  Avoid these : cellulose – cotton, bamboo, linen, cupro, modal, viscose, rayon / acetate / acrylic rich    because they burn readily . Note . . If you sell handmade nightwear for children you must include a fire hazard label .

And remember  “ METRE FROM THE HEATER “ – fabrics CAN ignite without physical contact with a naked flame or heat source.
