Community Day Activity For Elderly Available

May 10, 2021 May 2021 No Comments

Wharekaka Aged Care Facility has launched a new Community Day Activity service for older people living  in the South Wairarapa.

Held every Tuesday from 9.00 to 3.00pm at the Lions’ Den, Oxford Street, Martinborough, the programme offers interesting activities, a midday meal, and a welcome chance to chat and meet others over a cuppa.

Co-ordinated by one of Wharekaka’s experienced, trained caregivers, with support from an external qualified diversional therapist, the planned activities include bowls, card games, baking, quizzes and crafts.

“The Community Day is aimed at helping the frail elderly in our community. It will give them a chance to socialise with others, and perhaps offer a break for carers. Activities will be driven by what people are most interested in – there may even be speakers or entertainers. And the midday meal, made at Wharekaka, is outstanding,” says Jenny Prentice, Facility Manager, Wharekaka Rest Home and Villas.

At this stage, transport to and from the Lions’ Den is not provided, but Jenny says Wharekaka will explore this option “once we have a sustainable programme”.

If you are interested in attending this programme, please contact the Care Manager or Facility Manager at Wharekaka Rest Home, 06 306 9701. The programme is funded by Wairarapa DHB so if funding is required please contact your GP for a referral to FOCUS or contact them directly  06 946 9813.
