Dame Malvina Attending Martinborough Fundraiser at The Cabbage Tree Vineyard On December 1st
In 2008, the Wellington Youth Orchestra performed in the Martinborough Town Hall to assist with raising funds for the construction of the Martinborough Medical Centre. The audience was captivated by Aziel Verner, the diminutive violinist who played in the second violins; he was 11 at the time.
Aziel is returning to Martinborough for another fundraising concert, this time as a soloist to assist with raising funds for The Dame Malvina Major Foundation. He has been a guest artist and won several awards since his Wellington Youth Orchestra days including a scholarship to the inaugural Verbier Festival Music Camp in the Swiss Alps where he also performed with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra.
The Dame Malvina Major Foundation was set up by Dame Malvina Major in 1991 to “enable young performers of talent to reach their potential”. Funding is provided via the Foundation for emerging artists from the Performing Arts.
It is expensive to enroll in the top music colleges. Fees for the outstanding teaching institutions both in the UK and the USA together with modest living expenses can be around $80, 000 a year. There are limited scholarships available. A number of promising young New Zealand artists are fortunate to have been recipients of grants from The Foundation.
Winifred & David Bull, The Cabbage Tree Vineyard, were pleased to be asked by Patricia Hurley, on behalf of the Foundation, to host this fundraiser at their home.
Aziel Verner is one of four artists performing. The other three are his brother Asaph, a gifted pianist, Christian Thurston, Baritone and Daniela Rosa-Cepeda, Soprano both of whom sang leading roles in the recent NZ School of Music production of Verdi’s Il Corsaro. Accompanist, Heather Easting. Dame Malvina Major is attending this fundraising concert. It will be a beautiful concert.
This fundraiser is on Sunday 1st December from 3pm – 5pm. The ticket price is $65 which includes light refreshments and wine. For further information contact Winifred on (06) 306 8178.
