Kahutara’s school term was rounded off with a double celebration; the official opening of both the Ngatahi Education Hub and the BMX track on a beautiful sunny winter afternoon. Each were blessed by Poara Ammunson from Papawai Marae. Mayor Staples and BOT Chair Karen Shaw, assisted by senior pupils cut the appropriate ribbons.

The large number of parents gathered were thanked by Karen Shaw for the great effort they had put in to make the dream of the BMX track a reality. Also mentioned were the many commercial companies who had very generously donated towards the project.

Mayor Staples said that Kahutara School was known for its leadership and learning and that this buy in from the Community has resulted in this track which encourages kids to push the boundaries in a safe environment.
Poara Ammunson said that as a member of the Greytown Sport and Leisure Centre he was aware that wheel sports are fast growing. “The more we can do to support cycle sport the better” he said.

The person behind the BMX track idea and overseer of the project, Shane Hislop, spoke of all the time hard work which had been put by so many and the enthusiasm of the parents and others who turned up with their various machines to create this, Wairarapa’s only regulation approved BMX track. “The smiles as you children go around – and sometimes fall off, makes it all worth while” he said.
