I’m sure everyone is aware that the Martinborough Town Hall recently celebrated her 100th Anniversary. That’s one hundred years of service to her community and what a life she has led. The occasion was marked by two functions, a plaque unveiling and a celebratory ball. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the latter but I hear it was a great night. A big ‘thank you’ to the organisers of both events.

The plaque unveiling and associated function was heaps of fun. Excellent entertainment was provided by Martinborough School and members of Madcaps.

The whole evening had a feeling of being a family party, just like celebrating the birthday of a great aunt.  It’s lucky the hall can’t talk or I’m sure she could tell a few good stories of romance, intrigue and no doubt sadness at times. With strengthening and refurbishment she should be set to keep secrets for a few more years.

I am aware that a portion of our community feels we should demolish the hall and build a new one. Council’s decision to refurbish instead is based on cost. We simply can’t afford a new building offering the same or better facilities.

The Carterton Events Centre cost has just reached $9 million. Sorry folks but that price tag is beyond our reach. Even if our cost estimates for the strengthening and refurbishment balloon and treble we are still only half way to the $9 million price tag.
