Hau Ariki Marae, Our Community Marae

April 12, 2021 April 2021 No Comments

In 2018 the Hau Ariki Marae needed a makeover. The Martinborough community rose to the occasion.  People helped to paint.  They cleaned and undertook repairs.  Helpers in the wharekai kept everyone fed and in good spirits.  And to record the event Marae DIY filmed the result. It was a superb demonstration of how the community can work together for a common cause.

Hau Ariki is in many ways quite unique as a marae for the whole community. Built in the 1980’s following a collaboration with the council, it was established for Māori and Pakeha alike, where traditional Māori concepts, values and conventions could be nurtured and cultivated. The carved meeting house, Te Whare Wānanga o Tūpai, personifies the aspirations of Hau Ariki Marae.

Today Hau Ariki is overseen by a Marae Committee that includes Trustees. It is a place of learning for all ages; celebrating weddings or family occasions, providing accommodation for guests or seasonal workers. It even leases some of its land to a nearby vineyard

With an eye to the future, Hau Ariki looks to ensure its purpose of nurturing and cultivating Māoritanga as an integral part of our changing future. Extending the activities in the Marae to ensure it is used by Māori and Pakeha, young and old; whether by celebrating Te Reo as a unique spoken language of New Zealand or sharing the tikanga, the stories and culture.

It is time for the next step; strengthening the governance of Hau Ariki.

The Trust is calling for support. It needs people who can help with business skills, governance skills, communication skills, strategic thinking, or who could contribute as a Trustee.  If you know of people in our community with energy and expertise who could give some time voluntarily, and want Hau Ariki to become a place people feel connected to please contact:

Hau Ariki plans to open nominations for Trustees on the 29th May and close on the 21st June.  Trustees will be appointed or elected at an AGM planned to be held on the 26th June.

To learn more an information meeting will be held in the Supper room of the Waihinga Centre On : 22 April 2021 Time : 6.30pm

We look forward to seeing you there.  Nau mai, haere mai.
