Hospice Wairarapa from conception

In 2008, when Te Omanga ceased providing its services in the Wairarapa, over 3,600 people signed a petition supporting the reintroduction of the Hospice philosophy of care and Hospice Wairarapa Community Trust was formed.

Our community base, Te Kowhai, was purchased and 100 pairs of hands cut the ribbon surrounding the house and officially opened the building “By the people of Wairarapa for the people of Wairarapa”.

Eleven years on, we are still here providing FREE non-medical support through our 21 services. In our current model it costs over $600,000 per year to provide these services and with government funding of $11,000 we rely heavily on our retail outlets, donations, bequests, and fundraising activities to make up the shortfall. All this free support is only possible through the work of our small team of staff, our dedicated 140+ volunteers, and the generosity of our community.

We are very proud of the support we provide within the community for those on a palliative journey their family, whanau, and friends. All Hospice services are free of charge to anyone needing support and physical, cultural, spiritual, and emotional needs are all part of our hospice care, supporting people when they need it most.

Please head to our website, facebook page or phone to find out more details on the open day events, our services or how you can support Hospice.
