If I was a book, I would like to be a library book, so I would be taken home by all different sorts of kids.” – Cornelia Funke

Happy New Year!  Wairarapa Library Service is delighted to be welcoming our communities back into the libraries, catching up on what we’ve all been doing over the summer.

We’ve just wrapped up our annual Summer Reading Programme; it was fantastic to see the children coming in to do their report-ins, pick up each prize and choose some more books to read.  The Programme ended with a summer picnic to celebrate everybody’s achievements.

Summer has seen a lot of visitors to the Waihinga Centre – we’ve had many people commenting on how lovely the Centre is and what a great resource it is for the community… it’s something we’re working hard on!

Some of our awesome new fiction titles include: Devil and the dark water, Poly, When the music stops, Squeeze me and Trio.  Our new non-fiction includes: In the time of the Manaroans, How to – absurd scientific advice for common real-world problems and Aroha – Māori wisdom for a contented life lived in harmony with our planet, by renowned Māori youth forensic psychiatrist Hinemoa Elder.

If it’s too hot to visit the library, don’t forget our Libby app – it has a huge range of free e-books and audiobooks to borrow on your device.  You’ll need your library card number and your PIN – library staff are happy to help you get started.  Parents, check out a fantastic new resource called Storybox – a collection of over 300 storytelling videos to make screentime an engaging, learning experience.  This is a great way for children to discover a new author, which they can then find more titles in the Library.  Storybox is available through the Wairarapa Library Service website www.wls.org.nz

We’ve always got new books coming in, so make sure you put a regular visit to the Library on your to-do list.  Stay safe, stay cool and stay well-read.

“One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by.”
― Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle
