2022 Shoot out winners Biddy McLeod and Trevor Peterson.

By Kris Chamberlain

It has been an extremely busy time at the Club over the last month with a number of events happening.

Grumpies have been well attended with recent winners being Bob Schofield, Tony Taylor (twice), Malcolm Wood, Mariana McDermott and Seamus O’Sullivan.  Twos have been had by Andy Morison, Seamus O’Sullivan, Wayne Phelps (3), Tony Taylor, Ed Brown, Malcolm Wood (4), Paul Harris (4), Martin Napier (2),

Thursday Club winners have been Arthur Warren, Vern Anton, Shane Hislop and Ju Allen.  Twos have gone to Troy Shaw, John Warner (2), Rick Thompson, Arthur Warren, Jason Shaw, Rob Lopez, Malcolm Bridge, Wayne Phelps and Rob Smith.

At the end of October we hosted Eketahuna Golf Club to compete for the Baarbraa Trophy which we have failed to win for the last couple of years.  It was a very close call with Eketahuna averaging 31.55 points and Martinborough 31.61 so the sheep has a new home for the year!

At the beginning of November we held our Club Championship Finals.  The winners were:  Mens Senior Troy Shaw, runner up Tony Russo, Mens Intermediate Seamus O’Sullivan, runner up George Kirk, Mens Junior Dayle Scrimshaw, runner up Trevor Petersen, Mens Vets Brian Russo, runner up Andy Morison.  Womens Silver Sandra Petersen, runner up Debbie Donaldson, Womens Bronze A Julie Weber, runner up Marie Scrimshaw, Womens Bronze B Karen Stephens, runner up Alison Tipler.

The Ladies hosted the Royal Wellington ladies during the month to compete for the Lady Stout Trophy.  The competition is Stableford with the points added and divided by the number of players in the team.  Royal Wellington’s average was 29.666 and Martinborough’s was 31.785.

Two days later the men hosted Royal Wellington competing for the Bidwill/Leckie Cup.  The Martinborough boys had a convincing win 33-15.

During the month we held our annual Murray Halberg Day which had a good attendance but unfortunately the weather was not kind.  However, this did not deter everyone as some players completed their round in torrential rain.  The players who will be representing the Club at the Halberg Day in January next year are David Stevenson and Sue Fox.  Thanks to the generosity of local wineries we were able to raise over $3,000 for the Halberg Trust.

The day before Toast Martinborough we hosted our 36 Hole Mixed 4Somes.  1st gross went to Philippa Smith & George Kirk, 2nd Aimee & Alex Jones (Kapiti) and 3rd Debbie Donaldson & Martin Napier.  1st nett was Mariana McDermott & Pete Halstead, 2nd Alison Tipler & Sandy Bidwill and 3rd Britta Fraser & Garth Lippitt (Judgeford).  1st Stableford Julie Weber & Trevor Petersen, 2nd Ann & Steve Ricketts (Waikanae) and 3rd Olivia & Doug Clark.  Nearest the pins went to Doug Clark and Nicky Stephenson (Kapiti).

Last weekend we hosted the Mens and Womens Shoot Out Finals.  The morning weather was perfect for golf but unfortunately after the lunch break the heavens opened but that didn’t seem to affect the high standard of golf that was being played.  The womens winner was Bindy McLeod, 2nd Netia Morison, 3rd Lyle Griffiths and 4th Kris Chamberlain.  The mens winner was Trevor Petersen, 2nd Martin Napier, 3rd Colin Whibley-Smith and 4th Steve Croft.

The only tournaments left for the year are the Masterborough against Masterton and the following weekend is members only Xmas Cheer & Closing Day.  We have a few weeks off and then we will be ready to start again in January when we host the CE&R Electrical & Holmes Construction Pro Am on the 19th January.

That’s it for this year.  Wishing all golfers and non golfers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
