MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

April 10, 2018 April 2018 No Comments

It is great to see the return of an annual fixture between Martinborough and Karori GC, the re kindling of friendships playing for the prestigious ANZ Cup, which back in the day was played on an annual basis between our two Clubs.

It’s been a  long time between drinks break and the finding of the Cup put into the back of a cupboard for safe keeping.

Karori generously offered to host, their team of thirty six players and for our part, nine lads ventured over to represent us on a warm brilliant sunny day.

The Cups result is based on the best five stableford scores from both teams which went the way of the Hosts, though not by a huge margin considering the odds with Stableford scores totalling 186 and 171 respectively.

However, the individual competition was won by Guy Walmsley, Martinboroughs Committee member and new appointed Club Captain also an ex-Karori GC Club Captain with 41 points. 2nd was Mike Cox with 39 points and 3rd placed was Dick Adam with 38 points.
Two’s weIre won by Sheldon Mc Namara of MGC with an Eagle putt on hole 12, par 4. His drive landed on the green with the help of Victor from KGC because he stopped the ball from rolling well past the hole while preparing to putt for his bogey. He did not complain of being hit by the team behind because he hoped to be compensated with a drink at the clubhouse.
Other two’s were won by Jerry Barber, Dave Cullen and Malcolm Bridge of MGC.

The Mens Interclub season is underway and results have reflected their mixed successes. In the Wellington Competition, playing in Division 6 they are perched on the top of the table to the delight of the Selector.

The points allocated for the Wairarapa only Clubs Marquis Shield matches have the team in mid table though they have won quite a few individual and four ball matches the complicated formula used to derive the points allocated have not always gone in our favour.

The Women on the other hand have adopted a simple scoring method whereby you get a point for every win and a half for finishing your match all square.

The Lansdowne Trophy team is a composite of the best match players from all Wairarapa Clubs and Royal Wellington. They are holding their own in third place, with Shandon the favourites. Our Silver and Bronze Pennant teams have been playing from Masterton to Otaki and locally also competing in the Riverside Cup and Tilson Salver. There have been some great wins and a few not to mention losses.

March is madness on the Womens golfing calendar, not only are interclub matches scheduled on a fortnightly basis, these gals also play in a number of National Competitions namely the Coronation Medal, Aotearoa Cup, Vets Cup and Nancy Mac Cormack Foursomes and for the Nine hole group the Sue Bunt. We have exceeded in these Comps regularly mentioned in the  National top ten placings over the past few years and though our Captain Elaine Howe is delighted with seeing over thirty players playing on a Wednesday, the scores recorded this year will not be making breaking news.

Along with these Comps a number of the Women have been flying the flag at Open Days in the Region, all with varying degrees of success, the most notable at Carterton where eighteen players took part and most finishing in the top ten of each Division. Congrats to Bindy Mc Leod for winning the Silver Salver for Best Nett overall.

The month past was also filled with unexpected sadness, the Club members were left reeling with the sudden death of our Club Captain Bill Crook. Bill had a lot of passion for the Club whose dedication was with out question. Our sincerest condolences go to Bills family and friends.
