Martinborough Golf Round up

July 23, 2019 July2019 No Comments

As winter makes her presence felt, we can feel encouraged that the days will be getting lighter, and only 62 more days until Spring!!  The golf has been good through June and not many days have been rained off.  The course is looking supreme and the recent logging efforts have opened up new vistas all around the course….although the crosswind on 6 can now catch you out in a nor-wester!

Tournaments first up –the Martinborough Kindergarten Ambrose tournament raised in excess of $11k, Gloagy & Kate Patterson took over the reins this year and they did a great job!  The winners on the day were the Butcher, the Builder, the Plumber and the Farmer…..or for those of you who don’t know the formidable Ambrose team – Scott Reid, Shane Hartnell, Nige Malneek & Craig Colton.

In mid June we held the Ngahau Trophy & Grandparents Tournament – despite the name it was a well-attended event with barely a walking stick in sight….  The winners of the Ngahau trophy (Committee members) were Trevor Hawkins and Mary Desbonnet.  Top Grandma was Mary Desbonnet and winning Grandpas were Trevor Hawkins and Phil Eberlein. Non-grandma Karen Shaw & Non-Grandpa Bevan Sweeny.

Before the grumpies round-up, it is with great sadness that I report the passing of a regular ‘grumpy’ and a man every club member will remember; Adrian Blackett passed away on the 22nd June, our condolences to Robyn and the Blackett family, he will be sadly missed.  Grumpies winners in June have included Alan Eagle, Gary Cuttance, Terry Blacktop & Bill Gordon.

The 9 Hole group finished their Handicapped Champs with Debbie Coom the winner, and Sherryl Howie the runner up.  Billie Holmes won the plate with Jenny Joblin the runner up.  Other June winners have been Jane Fanselow Price and Jenny Tucker.

The ladies silver Pennants team finished the season in third place, so, with the Bronze team finishing second, it was a good year for Pennants.  Winners have been Julie Weber, Sandra Petersen and Jane Terpstra.

Thursday Club has avoided any rain cancellations although some opted for a ‘drowned-round’ rather than staying at home!! Winners have included Nick Morison, JD Smith, Malcolm Wood and Shaun Richards.  It was great to see the great Lance Phelps back out on the course at the end of June – hopefully he’s getting back in the swing of it!!

Congratulations to Mariana McDermott and Kris Chamberlain for their recent induction into the Eagles. They have been rightly recognised for their years of work for the Club and devotion to the sport.  Well done girls!

Coming up… the popular Featherston tournament held in Martinborough for the first time – The Dick Bennett Memorial held on Sunday 21st July – plenty of divisions and lots of prizes – register with the office.

That’s it from me for June – take care out there and enjoy yourselves; some lucky folk are heading to Aussie for some golf, maybe a story shared next time…although what goes on tour stays on tour… so they say!!!  Good golfing everyone!!!!
