OXFORD STREET FOOTPATH
Some progress has been made in persuading the SWDC to install progressively a temporary walkway/footpath on one side of Oxford Street. This is from near Regent Street to the junction with Todds Road, about 700 metres.
Forty six local residents signed a letter to the Council last November and their representative, Hiatt Cox, made a verbal submission to the Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 recently. He pointed out that the amount of money involved in laying a limestone walkway would be about $6,000 per year if the project was split over 2 years. Council was challenged as to whether a relatively small project of this scale could be started now with unspent budget monies or in some other way.
At this stage the project remains as a ‘submission’ to the Plan. Hiatt is hopeful that Council may yet find a way to get this small but necessary project underway soon.
Meanwhile walking on the narrow roadway remains a hazard for both residents and visitors.
